This morning the children in Year 4 experienced first hand what it would have been like to mummify a body for the afterlife just like they did in Ancient Egypt. As we didn't have a real body to use we carried out our experiement on tomatoes. Firstly we weighed them and then used a knife to make a small incision in the top before scooping out the insides. Next we rubbed the tomato with handwash and dried it before re-weighing it. Then we packed it full of a mixture of salt, bicarbonate of soda and sand to replicate the natron used by the Ancient Egyptians. The tomato was then buried in it's own casket surrounded by more of the mixture and the caskets were put to rest in a cool dark place. Now we are eagerly awaiting to open them up in 2 weeks time to see if our mummifying skills have been successful! We'll keep you posted with our results - they might be gruesome!
